SINGAPORE: From chicken rice and meat noodles to biryani and laksa, some of Singapore’s most well-known hawker stalls have already been awarded a “Bib Gourmand” by the very first edition of Singapore Michelin Guide.
The French gastronomic guide had been begun by tyre business Michelin in 1900 and posts 25 guides addressing 28 nations. It awards the Bib Gourmand to food establishments offering a high-quality selection at a reasonable cost - which in Singapore suggests at the most S$45.

An overall total of 34 restaurants and hawker stalls were chosen with regards to their “good worth for money”, said Mr Michael Ellis, Michelin Guides’ Global Director.
The list includes well-known eateries like 328 Katong Laksa and New Ubin Seafood, also hawker favourites like Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at Maxwell Food Centre, Fishball Story at Golden Mile Food Centre and Hong Kee Beef Noodle at Amoy Street Food Centre.

"a genuine crossroads, a mix of cultures with Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian impacts, Singapore's history is shown with its food - the variety, user friendliness and authenticity totally won over our inspectors, " Mr Ellis said.

Amoy Street Food Centre gets the largest group of stalls awarded the Bib Gourmand, with four in the food centre alone. At the same time, Tiong Bahru Market and Whampoa Market have two award champions each.
A number of the eateries Channel NewsAsia talked to stated these were amazed by the award.
"I'm extremely excited about being on this record, i did not expect it, " said co-founder of A Noodle Story Gwern Khoo. "It really is a form of recognition for what we have been doing day in, day out. Therefore I'm truly pleased."
